How Piano Tuning Works

Tuning a piano looks deceptively simple: a technician turns a set of pins until the notes sound right. In reality, tuning is a careful negotiation between physics, the human ear, and the structure of the instrument itself. Understanding the process helps you appreciate why it takes skill, why it can't be rushed, and why a piano needs it more than once.

Pitch and the A440 Standard

Every musical note corresponds to a frequency, measured in cycles per second, or hertz (Hz). Modern pianos are tuned so that the A above middle C vibrates at 440 Hz — the reference known as A440 or concert pitch. From that single anchor, every other note on the keyboard is set in a fixed mathematical relationship. When a technician "raises" or "lowers" the pitch of a piano, they are moving the entire instrument back to that standard reference, which orchestras, tuners, and electronic instruments around the world share.

A440 is not arbitrary. It was formalized as an international standard in the mid-twentieth century so that instruments built and played in different countries could perform together. Strings, Unisons, and the Tuning Lever

A full-size piano has around 230 strings for 88 keys. Most notes are produced not by one string but by two or three strings tuned to the same pitch, called a unison. The bass notes use one or two thicker, copper-wound strings; the middle and treble use two or three plain steel strings each. When all the strings in a unison vibrate at exactly the same frequency, the note sounds clean and full. When they drift even slightly apart, you hear a wavering or "beating" that makes the piano sound tired.

The technician adjusts each string with a tuning lever (also called a tuning hammer), which grips the tuning pin where the string is wound. A tiny rotation — often a fraction of a degree — changes the tension and therefore the pitch. The tuner listens for the beats between strings and between related notes, refining each one until the whole instrument locks into agreement.

Equal Temperament: A Practical Compromise

Here is the part that surprises many people: a piano is never tuned to be perfectly "in tune" in a pure mathematical sense. Because of the physics of vibrating strings, you cannot make every interval acoustically perfect at the same time. Instead, pianos use a system called equal temperament, which divides the octave into twelve equal steps and spreads the small unavoidable imperfections evenly across all keys.

The result is a compromise that lets you play in any key and have it sound equally acceptable — a necessity for the wide-ranging music written for the piano. Why a Piano Drifts Out of Tune

Even a piano that is never played will slowly go out of tune. The main reasons are:

  • Humidity changes. The wooden soundboard swells in humid weather and shrinks in dry weather, changing the tension on the strings. This is by far the largest factor — see our guide on humidity and your piano.
  • String settling. New strings and freshly tuned strings continue to stretch and seat themselves for some time afterward.
  • Playing. The force of the hammers striking the strings thousands of times gradually nudges pitches downward.
  • Temperature. Rapid temperature swings affect both the strings and the metal frame.

What a Tuning Appointment Involves

A standard tuning on a piano that is close to pitch usually takes one to two hours. If a piano has fallen far below A440 — common in instruments that have gone years without service — the technician may first perform a pitch raise, a rough pass that brings the whole instrument up before a fine tuning locks it in. Because the added tension causes the piano to settle, a badly neglected instrument sometimes needs a follow-up tuning within a few weeks to hold pitch reliably.
